How to Downsize Sentimental Clutter with 5 Simple Questions

Lately, my husband and I have been sorting through a stash of old keepsakes, and I’ve heard from many of my Clarity Connection members that they’re doing the same. But here’s the big question: Which memories are worth the space, and which can you lovingly let go?
Sentimental items can tug hard at your heartstrings, which makes it easy to hang on to everything. But I’ve developed a simple method to help you make those decisions with clarity and care. Just remember: HAPPY.
H = HAPPY – Does it spark happy memories?
Not everything with history brings joy. If something reminds you of a heartbreak, a hard time, or a toxic person, it's okay to release it. You lived through it; you don't need a physical (or digital) reminder dragging you back. I suggest you only keep things that generate positive feelings.
A = AMPLE – Is this an ample example?
If your best friend sends you a birthday card every year, that’s sweet! But do you really need all 27 of them? Keep the one where she wrote a heartfelt note that truly captures your bond, make sure it’s dated and that ONE is the keeper.
P = PHOTO – Would a photo be enough?
Oversized furniture, your child’s preschool art, a favorite outfit from the 20th century, these things can be tough to part with. But ask yourself: would a photo of this item preserve the memory just as well without taking up precious space?
P = PIECE – Can a piece be enough?
Instead of keeping all of your late father’s neckties, your baby’s entire wardrobe, your concert tee-shirts, or your grandmother’s china (I could go on!), pick a few meaningful pieces. Consider creating a memory quilt, framing one item, or curating a small collection instead of storing it all. Even better, USE the teacups and donate the rest of the dishes, it’s okay be break up sets into pieces as well.
Y = YEAR & YORE – What’s the year and what’s the story?
If you’re keeping it, please record the backstory! Write the year and a quick note about what makes this item special. Future you (and future generations) will thank you. “What’s this, and why am I keeping it?” is a question we’ve all asked. You can even be modern and use QR Codes and recordings to give your mementos a voice.
The truth is, you don’t have to keep everything to keep the memories. A curated selection of the right mementos will spark more joy than a whole attic full of “just in case” items.
And if space is limited, let this be your “permission slip”. I promise that if done thoughtfully, you can still honor the past without sacrificing your peace in the present.
