Shoe Storage Showdown: Box or Not?!

Closet lovers, let’s settle this once and for all: Should shoes live in their boxes, or be stored out in the open?
After organizing closets for more than 20 years, I can tell you this: I’ve seen a lot of “cardboard coffins” stacked high on shelves. And while I understand the appeal of using the shoebox they came in, I have a strong opinion about this one… 👉 Shoes deserve better.
Why You Should Rethink Shoe Boxes
1. Accessibility matters.
Shoes hidden away in boxes lead to unstacking, digging, and playing the “mystery shoebox” game. With open storage, you can see your entire shoe collection at a glance and grab what you need quickly.
2. Out of sight = out of mind.
If your shoes aren’t visible, chances are you’ll forget about them and end up wearing the same pair repeatedly. Open storage encourages you to rotate, enjoy, and actually use your footwear.
3. Dust happens anyway.
Shoes collect dirt the moment you step outside. Whether in a box or not, they will need care. A quick wipe with a microfiber cloth or shoe brush is all it takes to keep them fresh.
Shoe Storage Ideas That Work
If you’re ready to give your shoes some fresh air, here are my favorite shoe storage solutions that combine function with style:
- Spacious shelves: Go for at least 36" wide so you can fit four pairs across. Solid or fabric bottoms on shelves (vs rails) keeps heels from slipping through gaps.
- Custom cubbies: Organize by color, type, or season. Open cubbies make your closet feel boutique-worthy while keeping shoes easy to grab.
-
Over-the-door racks: Perfect for maximizing space in smaller closets. (Skip the tiny individual pockets because they are more frustrating than useful.)
The Verdict: Shoes Out of the Box
Cardboard coffins may come free with your purchase, but they don’t belong in your closet long term. With smart shoe storage, you’ll actually see and wear what you own, keep your collection in better shape, and enjoy a calmer, more functional closet.
So tell me—are you "Team Box", or "Team Out in the Open"?
