Is Your Home a Sanctuary or Storage?
Let me ask you something that might stop you in your tracks for just a second.
When you walk through your front door at the end of a long day, how does it feel? Does it feel like coming home to your personal retreat, a place that welcomes you and helps you exhale? Or does it feel a little more like walking into a storage facility that you happen to sleep in?
If it's the second one, you're not alone. And there's actually a name for what's happening.
Your home has quietly turned into a store.
A "store home" isn't necessarily messy. It can look perfectly tidy on the surface. But it has that underlying feeling of too much, too many decisions, too many things asking for your attention the moment you walk in.
It might look like:
- Closets so full you can't see what's in them
- A garage that hasn't had a car in it for years
- Countertops that are permanently covered with stuff
- Cabinets you have to navigate carefully so nothing falls out
- A guest room that's become the room where things go to be forgotten
Sound familiar? Trust me, none of this happened because you're disorganized or careless. It happened because we live in a world that is very, very good at getting things into our homes and very quiet about helping us get things out.
Please know a “sanctuary” home isn't perfect or Pinterest-worthy. It doesn't require a renovation or a decorator. It just requires that the things in your home are things you actually use, love, or need, and that everything has a place to live.
A sanctuary home feels like:
- Walking in and smiling instead of feeling burdened
- Opening a closet and finding what you came for
- Having guests over without a panic clean first
- Sitting down at the end of the day and actually relaxing
That feeling is available to you. It's not about having less stuff for the sake of minimalism. It's about having the RIGHT stuff, in the right amount, in the right places.
But how to get from “store” to “sanctuary”? The shift doesn't happen all at once, and it doesn't need to. Here are three questions to ask yourself.
- If I moved tomorrow, would I take this with me?
This one cuts right through the noise. Is it worth wrapping, packing, and paying someone to move it? If the answer is no, that's worth paying attention to.
- Does this item have a home, or does it just have a location?
There's a difference. A “home” is intentional; it’s a dedicated place where something lives. Where you can trust yourself to find it in the future. A “location” is just where that item landed and stayed.
- Is this item serving me, or am I serving it?
Every single thing you own asks something of you in return: space, upkeep, insurance, and always: a decision about what to do with it someday. Make sure this dynamic of owning and maintaining your things feels worth it.
You don't have to answer all three questions about everything you own all at once. Just pick one room, one corner, one drawer, and ask these questions of the items there. See how it feels.
My guess? If you answer honestly, you'll find it easier than you think to curate what you're keeping, give everything a proper home, and turn your space into the sanctuary it was always meant to be.
