🌎10 Easy Tips to Help Your Home (& The Planet!)
Earth Day comes every April, and if you are anything like me, you probably want to be a little more mindful… but not take on something overwhelming.
The good news is you do not have to change everything to make a difference.
In fact, some of the best changes are the ones that also make your home easier to manage. When your home is more organized, you naturally waste less. You use what you have, you stop overbuying, and things do not get lost in the back of a cabinet.
Here are 10 simple, realistic ways to get started:
- Use what you already have
Before buying something new, take a quick look around your home. Most people already have what they need; they just cannot find it.
- Keep a donation bag going
Instead of waiting for a big decluttering day, keep a bag in your closet and add to it as you go. I call it a “donation station,” and you’d be surprised how quickly I can fill it!
- Stop buying “just in case” items
These tend to create clutter and rarely get used the way we imagine. Gifts for “someone”, “someday” top this list!
- Store things where you actually use them
When items live where you use them, and not tucked away, you are much more likely to use what you already own.
- Let go of duplicates
Extra kitchen tools, multiple versions of the same clothing item, backups of things you rarely use. Choose your favorite and let the rest go.
- Keep a simple grocery system
Use a running list and check your fridge and pantry before shopping to avoid overbuying and food waste.
- Learn your local recycling rules
Take a few minutes to understand what your area actually accepts. It makes recycling easier and more effective.
- Be honest about what you actually use
If you have not used it in a long time, it may not belong in your current life. We all have items we thought we would use someday. If that day has not come, it is probably time to let it go.
- Buy with intention
Pause before purchasing and ask yourself where the item will live in your home and how often you will use it. Perhaps you can borrow it instead?
- Make small changes, not big ones
You do not need a full overhaul. A few small shifts done consistently will make a bigger impact than one big effort that does not last.
These are not difficult things to incorporate into your life, and when your home is lighter and easier to manage, everything feels better.
And as a bonus, you'll likely find yourself wasting less without even trying that hard. That’s good for you and great for the planet!
